The World(MSCI All Country World Index weighting)Entire U.S. stock market: 63%Japan, UK, Canada, France, Hong Kong/China combined: 17.5%Magnificent 7: 17%Source: Dimensional FundsThat seems crazy, no? For example, in the mid-1960s the concentration of the top 10 was over 40% of the S&P 500. Investors who own the S&P 500 don't have to pick those winners; they just go along for the ride. Second, U.S. stocks are global market leaders, and when a small group becomes market leaders it almost always means the U.S. stock market outperforms the world. The U.S. stock market, which was roughly 40% of the global market capitalization a short while ago, is now roughly 50% of global market capitalization.

International stocks have underperformed for over a decade, while US growth names took off. However, foreign companies have attractive relative valuations and earnings growth. Why foreign stocks are more than just a good dealAnyone bullish on international stocks will almost always point to their valuations relative to US companies. Investors can get downside protection in this uncertain environment by buying international stocks that are high quality and can generate their own growth, Deladerriere said. And in addition to their rising earnings growth, the fund manager noted that the two pay sizable dividends.

We won’t know for sure that we’ve had a recession until well after it’s started, and, quite probably, not until long after it’s ended. But the bureau waited 15 months, until July 2021 to declare that a recession happened. The economic research bureau “dates recessions only after they’ve begun,” Marlena Lee, the global head of investment solutions at Dimensional Fund Advisors, said in an email. I find these averages reassuring:One year after the starting dates, the S&P 500 returned 6.4 percent. Three years after the starting dates, it returned 12.1 percent.
Wes Crill believes the stock market may have already bottomed, according to historical precedence. In the long term, he's bullish on value stocks once again taking the reigns as market leaders. "In fact, the average return for value stocks was a little bit higher in periods where the overall stock market was positive." Across Wall Street, Crill's not the only one with a longer-term overweight towards value stocks. Instead, he says investors should stick to what history dictates works best: value stocks over a long time horizon.

There are many studies that indicate what happens to portfolios when they are not invested on days when the markets move up (or down) significantly. Hypothetical growth of $1,000 invested in the S & P 500 in 1970 through August 2019 Total return $138,908 Minus the best performing day $124,491 Minus the best 5 days $90,171 Minus the best 15 days $52,246 Minus the best 25 days $32,763 Source: Dimensional Funds These are amazing statistics. Missing just one day — "the best day" — in the last 50 years means you are making more than $14,000 less. With the S & P 500 down nearly 20% for the year, he pointed out that just 5 days account for 98% of that loss. The same as my example above: "It is impossible to know ahead of time which days will 'make the year' in either up or down markets," he said.

Funds tied to China, like the KraneShares CSI China Internet ETF (KWEB) , have made significant rebounds on the China reopening. "All eyes are on China," Tom Lydon, vice chairman of VettaFi, told Dominic Chu on CNBC's "ETF Edge" on Monday. China aside, fixed income funds are also seeing an end-of-year pop as more investors seek out opportunities for tax-loss harvesting plays. Its income-focused product, GraniteShares HIPS US High Income ETF (HIPS) provides exposure to four of the highest-yielding securities across alternative income: MLPs, REITs, BDCs and closed-end funds. The JPMorgan Equity Premium Income ETF (JEPI) seeks to provide a majority of the returns tied to the S&P 500 Index, while the Nationwide Risk-Managed Income ETF (NUSI) replicates the Nasdaq-100.

Stocks dipped, with the Dow sliding nearly 300 points, or 0.9%, in late morning trading. One stock in particular that had been surging in anticipation of a sweeping victory for the GOP got hit hard Wednesday. The market rallied sharply during the past three days following a historic surge for stocks in October. Still, as the midterm dust settles, investors may now shift their attention back to inflation and the economy. “Markets have performed remarkably similar during periods of a Republican or Democratic controlled Congress.”
Ascentxmedia | E+ | Getty ImagesAdd this to the list of challenging questions for retirement savers: Should I contribute to a pre-tax or Roth account? The key difference between a pre-tax and Roth accountThe tax code offers a financial benefit to Americans who contribute to a qualified retirement account like a 401(k) plan or individual retirement account. The core difference between a pre-tax and Roth account is when savers reap those benefits — and when their taxes come due. In a pre-tax account, savers get an upfront tax benefit. The opposite is true of a Roth account: Savers pay tax upfront when they contribute money, but don't pay income tax on withdrawals in retirement.
Kikoncos | Getty ImagesIt's Sunday morning, and my kids are checking player reports to evaluate their fantasy football lineups. In many ways, the highs and lows of fantasy football remind me of how many people approach investing. But with your investment portfolio, the fantasy can only go so far and the stakes can be much higher. This may be a good time to think about the difference between speculating and long-term investing — and recognize that your investment decisions have real and lasting consequences. Your investment decisions should be based on a time horizon that matches your goals.
